Wednesday, Bent Paddle Brewing released their Barrel Aged, Double Shot, Double Black and NorthlandBeer.com was on hand to give it a whirl. BP has a history of taking standard beer styles an creating their own unique bent twist on them. This brew is no exception to that approach.
Opaque Jet Black, Tan quickly diminishing head.
The first thing that hit me was how much the scent of this beer reminded me of the coffee flavored hard candies I loved as a kid, only with an added vanilla punch.
Sweet creamy upfront mouth-feel with notes of coffee, vanilla, oak and dark chocolate. Many beers of this style often have some coconut notes, but I didn’t get that with this beer. For me, the vanilla was the frontman. The brewers added an organic vanilla bean to each barrel. The coffee, dark bitter chocolate and oak played impressive supporting roles. Double Shot finishes with a clean acidic tang. That said, Bent Paddle also offered a cask version of this beer that featured a much oakier lead role, which finished very dry and woody. The strong presence of alcohol warming was a very obvious element in both versions which you’d expect in a 11.2 abv beer, but seemed to come through even more in the cask sample.
This is another great beer by the folks at Bent Paddle, and as a skier, the use of “Double Black” in the branding evokes the warm feelings of sitting by a warm fire after a day of hitting the slopes. This would be the perfect beer for that occasion. Bombers will be on sale at the brewery this Sunday, and soon after that, it will be available in select liquor stores in the Twin Ports and Twin Cities.
